Samsung Electronics has reached a surprise settlement with Headwater Research LLC after a U.S. jury ordered the South Korean tech giant to pay $278.7 million (₹2,330 crore) in a patent infringement case. The lawsuit centered on wireless communication technologies designed to improve Wi-Fi speed, reduce congestion, and extend battery life. Headwater argued Samsung used its patented innovations without proper licensing, while Samsung denied infringement and challenged the patents’ validity. The case, heard in the Eastern District of Texas, ended with one of Samsung’s costliest patent losses before both parties agreed to settle in September 2025.
